COMPUTER CLUBS FOR CHILDREN
Goal The goal of this program is to empower children in Eastern Europe to become productive members of society in the new world of the Information Age. Participants are learning how to access the Internet and learn word processing, spreadsheet and presentation skills that will make them marketable productive members of society in the business community. The success of this program will also result in a significant reduction in juvenile delinquency among teenagers leaving the protective custody of government institutions at age 18 and among children from poor families. There are now eighteen Computer Clubs and approximately 2000 children enrolled in the program in Romania and one club and 60 children enrolled in Bulgaria. Partners Partners involved in this project in Romania include Andrea Foundation, the Ministry of Education, the Department of Child Protection in Bucharest, Braila and Sibiu, RoEduNet (Computer Network of the National Education System) and MobiFon SA (Connex). Graduate level students are recruited from Mathematics, Economics and Engineering Universities as salaried instructors for the clubs in orphanages. The Association for Better Health is our partner in Bulgaria. The United Nations Development Programme (Romania) was a partner for two years. History How you can help: Help us expand this program by donating laptop computers, wireless access points, laser printers with network cards, lcd projectors, video cams, digital cameras, software licenses for Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office Standard Edition and funds to pay for Internet connect time. We are in search of corporate donors. Read about our Computer Clubs in Romania in an article from the June 2001 issue of Choices, a United Nations Development Programme publication. Read about our Computer Clubs in Romania and Bulgaria in the Oct-Dec 2001 and Oct-Dec 2002 issues of Connections, a publication of the Dreyfus Health Foundation. View a Bulgarian newspaper article and read the translation describing the first Computer Club in Bulgaria.
